The bikini division of an NPC fitness competition is one where women have the opportunity to show off their incredible physiques with flair. When it comes to bikini competitions, great posing is critical.
IFBB bikini competitor and professional posing coach Tawna Eubanks shares 5 tips to nail perfect posing for bikini:
1. Have a Second Pair of Eyes
Get a coach. When competing for the first time in a NPC bikini competition, the best tip is to find a knowledgeable instructor who knows what they’re doing.
“It’s easier having somebody else looking at you, helping you, and guiding you,” Tawna says. Make sure you find someone who is knowledgeable on how to pose or has firsthand experience in it.
2. Be Careful Watching YouTube
“YouTube is a great resource but it can be a scary thing to do if you’re trying to learn posing,” Tawna says.
There can be some great advice out there, but there can also be some really bad advice. As a beginner it can be hard to tell the good from the bad. Good posing is tailored to you. Ultimately you need to learn what looks best for you, and that will give you the most success. One hard thing about youtube videos can be that they are made as general advice, and won’t work for everyone watching. I understand not everyone has access to coaches, or NPC seminars in their area or at the right time so just keep in mind when you’re watching videos that you need to apply bits of information to yourself, and leave some of it for other viewers to use.
You never want to follow what someone else is doing because even if their posing is GREAT, it’s because they are posing in a way that fits their body. Just recreating their routine for your body can have the opposite effect.
The biggest key for NPC bikini posing is appearing to be “effortless.”
“The worst thing you can do is looked forced on stage,” Tawna says. In the NPC bikini division, it’s not all about your physique.
“It’s about your total package. It’s about the presentation,” she says. “If you get up there and try to force your muscles to pop out, you’re going to look like you’re trying too hard. In bikini, you’re supposed to look like you just happen to look like that and it should flow effortlessly. Let your physique do the talking on its own.
4. Practice Makes Perfect
You won’t get any better at anything if you don’t you practice it.
Practicing can be a little overwhelming if you don’t know what you’re doing, so Tawna suggests practicing it in steps.
Don’t try to learn an entire routine in one kick. “Practice and learn everything in steps,” Tawna says, which is how she conducts her one-on-one posing sessions. Learning in it sections isn’t going to be too overwhelming and you tie pieces together as you get better and more confident.
5. Just be Yourself
Don’t try to be anybody else, mimic anybody else, or do something that’s out of your comfort zone.
“In order to look your very best, you have to feel your very best,” Tawna says. Do what’s comfortable for you, be yourself, and have fun with it. With all the hard work you put into it, you’ll look and feel absolutely phenomenal.
